Hey guys,
If you remember, a while ago I did a report for school on Harold Lloyd. The silent film star. Well this time around I thought I would just do a report for you guys on another silent film star. Buster Keaton, and one of his best movies. Mr Keaton was born right here in the midwest, in Piqua, Kansas. (which I have been though a couple times.) He was born, Joseph Frank Keaton VI and was later given the name "Buster", when at the age of six months he tumbled down some stairs and was unharmed. (Talk about a omen of things to come huh?) Buster, his father and mother all were in Vaudeville, and often shared the stage with such people as Harry Houdini, W C Fields, Mr. Bojangles himself, (Bill Robinson, Eddie Cantor and Al Jolson. They had one of the most dangerous acts ever put on stage, all around pranks Buster would perform and his parents would have to save him from. At the age of twenty one, Buster's father became a alcoholic and they had to stop doing the act.
Buster saw his first movie studio in march of 1917 and by april he made his debut film The Butcher Boy. He stayed making films for the same studio even after returning from the war. In 1928 he sighed on with MGM Studios, they treated him very badly, not letting him make films his way, being very strict on everything he did for them. Which led him to be very said and he got into drinking himself. After a big fight, he was finally fired from the studio, but by this time he was long pass caring. Later he was checked into a mental hospital, having gotten as bad as his father years before. Someone at MGM felt sorry for him and rehired him again in 1937 to be their "gag" man. But they didn't feel too sorry for him, because they only paid him 100.00 a week, and he was making ten time that before.
All that is very sad I know, sorry for that guys, but here is the happy part. Buster Keaton was one of the only silent films stars to survive the time when movies jumped over in the talkies we know today. In fact you can see him in his later years cutting it up in old Beach Blanket movies, still wearing his signature straw hat. He also got into brand new media, television and had his own show at one point. I don't know of any other silent film star to do that, maybe Charlie Chaplin? I have yet to get into him. Oh! They were in a movie together called Limelight, I'll have to look for that one.

Buster Keaton's comedies were a lot like the stage act he performed with his parents as a child, he was always getting knocked around, having to perform incredible stunts, ect. In one of his movies he is caught in a giant wind storm and at one point has a house dropped right on him. He is okay though, because he is standing right where there is a opened window. Simple incredible. And you have to remember, he did his own stunts back in a day when there was no blue screens and no CGI. Everything you see him doing is real.

It wasn't until 1959 that he finally won a Oscar for his life work, something he should have gotten a long time before then.

If you want to see some of his best stunts, including the one I mentioned above; go here.

Now on to my review. :)

The General -

"Rejected by the Confederate army as unfit and taken for a coward by his beloved Annabelle Lee (Marian Mac), young Johnie Gray (Keaton) sets out to single handedly win the war with the help of his cherished locomotive. What follows is, without exaggeration, probably the most cleverly choreographed comedy ever recorded. Johnie wages war against hijackers, an errant cannon and the unpredictable hand of fate while roaring along the iron rails, exploiting the the comedic potential of Keaton's favorite props, the train. Insisting on accuracy in ever detail, Keaton created a remarkably authentic historical epic, replete with hundreds of costumed extras, full scale sets and the breath taking plunge of an actual locomotive from burning bridge into a river. "

Buster Keaton always said this was by far his favorite movie, and I can see why. He put so much of himself into it. Building sets that were to scale, not minatures, spending money and getting not one but two real trains, and hiring 500 national guardsmen from Oregon to play both armies. He did all of his own stunts as well, just like always.
The movie itself is based on a true story! In April 1862, Union agent James J. Andrews led a squad of 21 soldiers on a daring secret raid. Dressed in civilian clothes, Andrews and his men traveled by rail into the Southern states. Their mission was to sabotage rail lines and disrupt the Confederate army's supply chain. At the town of Little Shanty, GA, the raiders stole a locomotive known as "The General." They headed north, tearing up track, burning covered bridges and cutting telegraph lines along the way. Just like what happens in the movie. Johnnie sees this and gets in another train, and the race is on. He has to get a head of them and warn the troops as to what has happened, and to prove his bravery to his one true love.

This was a great movie, full is stunts, laughs and some of the funniest sight gags I have seen in a old movie. There is one scene where Annabelle and Johnnie are on the train trying to getaway from the bad guys, Johnnie asks her to help him shovel in more coal. She sits on the floor and hands him pieces of coal one at a time, picking out "the pretty ones" and throwing away the ugly ones. hehehe , too funny. The whole movie is a little over a hour long, but it will have you on the edge of your seats in places and your jaw will drop at some of the stunts. This is really a great movie to watch with the whole family.

So if you are looking for a good family movie to watch, why not go back old school and check this one out. It is considered by a lot of people to be one of the greatest movies ever made. To me it is just a great movie to watch and enjoy.

You can find it on Amazon, or on Turner Classic Movies web site. Seek this one out guys, I know you will really like it a lot.

Just finished and filed my review of Sherlock Holmes for Tor.com (short version: it was awful and I loved it), and before that, I made some candles. See, I used to commit chandlery fairly often but had fallen out of the habit, and yesterday [info]cristalia mentioned she was thinking of taking it up, which inspired me to break out the wax and crayons.

I'm still staring meaningfully at The White City, trying to figure out how the damed thing works. It would be nice if I could finish it by year's-end. But it all depends on if the story tells me how it ends.

I guess tomorrow I start rereading it again.

It's finally raining out there, and the wind is gusting fiercely, but it's 41 degrees, which seems positively balmly.

Statuesque aired last night on Sky 1. I didn't see it. Didn't get to see the first part of the last David Tennant Doctor Who either. (Statuesque is currently available on Sky Anytime, for UK Sky subscribers, until the 31st of Dec. Look it up under the title of "Ten Mintue Tales") (Yes, Mintue. I know they mean Minute, but that's what it's up as right now.)

On the other hand, we got a few hour's sunlight today. I saw some of that. And yesterday we went for a walk and, using map coordinates and the GPS Mike's amazing new Google Cell Phone (aka Dogfood) we found a Viking stone circle. And I'm cooking a lot on the Aga. My favourite present was one my children had clubbed together to get me: a painting of my dog, by artist Kelli Bickman. They know I love Kelli's stuff, and figured that I would be made happy by a painting of Cabal by her. And I am, very happy indeed.

Anyway. I hope you had a very happy Boxing Day, and that all your boxes belong to you.

This post has been looooooooooooong overdue, I know! Somehow with work overwhelming me and unwinding from said work needing to be done, I just could never find the time to post on livejournal. I've been BUSY!! Really, really busy!! It might be hard to believe, but I've actually seen tons of friends and done a lot of interesting things when I could spare a bit of time! (Basically, this means that I have basically not been home, except the occasional night and rare early morning for the last two months!! o.o!)

However, from now until the end of the year............. FREEDOM!!!! Okay, I have various things planned here and there, and I need to do a ton of writing for both current and new writing jobs (which I LOVE!), but most important.... I need to work on my manga! (And my projects!!) The first step in my plan is to revamp my livejournal and move everything over to my new webspace (the old one is finally expiring. This will include the FAQ and a new layout among other things. WIP!). Second step is to make a new webpage! Third step is to get that webcomic set up! Fourth step (before the end of the year) is to finally finish the prints! Fifth step is to finish my prints v.1!! I am SO excited!!! I am also going to dig out and finish some other projects from the boonies. And I may have a New Years party, but not sure on that one yet.. Other projects (including make-apartment-awesome!! projects) exist as well, but they're just for whenever I can fit them in..

ANYWAYS!! I have been BUSY. Anybody want to see some pictures?? Here are 45 of them! Everything from JUMP Festa to parties to food to weird japanese things! )

That link is also full of rambling about my life these days... lol!

I still need suggestions for my FAQ! Anybody who wants to ask something, please head over here!

My mom made me a totally awesome pair of pink and purple socks!

20090406 003

I guess now I get to sit and stare and think about how to fix The White City so it works. Maybe I will spin and listen to NPR. That seems a sitting and staring sort of occupation.

So close to the end. So close. Two ot three days' work, if I can just figure out what the work should be.

Meanwhile, today's teacup is one sent to me by [info]stwish, made by his friends at Earthbound Arts (I also have a mermaid and a faerie queene--ornaments--from there, and both are lovely)  And today's tea is the last of the crepe faire from Stash--the last crepe faire ever, I suspect, as they've discontinued the flavor.

I have read and edited that which I have written of The White City. And wonder of wonder, I like it. A lot, actually.

And still I have no idea at all how to end it. I mean, I know who the killer is and stuff. But I don't know how to build the climax and a thematic resolution that will make a satisfying finish to the story. Also, I have to go back and put in some more clues who the killer is. Making things feel inevitable and not arbitrary is a significant portion of the storyteller's craft.

I sense a lot of staring and pacing in my life for the next week or so.

"No really. I am working!"

Pursuant to the spinning, I'm thinking again about the stuff we strive to get right in fantasy. So much of the work set in the past, or alternate pasts, gets the details of life so very wrong. People have no trades, or if they do they are desperate to escape them. And actually, people who work with their hands often like what they do. Making stuff, after all, is quite satisfying.

Some authors do this very well--Connie Willis, Barbara Hambly. People work in their books, and the worlds feel real.

Another thing that always seems to fall out of fantasy written by modern authors is how integrated life was. People did not have work and leisure; everything ran together. You sat and spun while someone told stories, or you sang songs and worked the winch, or talked and shucked peas. And good tradesmen were respected in direct proportion to their indispensibility. A village blacksmith or potter is a hard thing to live without.

Our modern emphasis on book learning, I think, creeps in there and corrupts how we talks about other cultures.

Lots of sad and serious things in the news today, but I don't really know how to talk about all of that this point. All I can say about the Detroit incident is that I'm going to focus on the positive and be glad that the bomb didn't go off, it's a Christmas miracle, etc.

I was really tense all day, but Christmas went reasonably well. Sam says hi )

So: what was your favorite present, and/or what did you do today?

Oh, P.S. I put up A Very Shelfy Christmas, Part 1 yesterday.

My poor nondog.

Still no idea about how to be a dog.

I gave him his holiday dinner, which is canned dog food (he has never had it before) and he's still trying to figure out what to do with it.

He is starting to think it might taste REALLY good, though.

(Technically speaking, it's dessert: he had his regular dinner about an hour ago.)

He does not know how to be a dog, but he is learning. He actually stole something out of the recycling bin the other day to lick, which is a first. It was a chicken broth container.

He's really quite ludicrous, and I love him very much.

Christmas pronounced a success. (My immediate local family--none of us are actually Christians, but we celebrate a secular Christmas anyway, and often these days it even falls on the actual day. It didn't always, because my mom was a hospital employee for 25 years.)(See above, December Non-Denominational Gift-Giving Day.)

20090406 009We made out first ever Yorkshire puddings, which came out awesome and we were all boggled at just how easy it is. Next time, a little longer in the oven, and we will use a metal muffin tin instead of the silicon muffin cups, because, well, the silicon cups were too slippery and the puddings just levitated themselves out of the cups rather than getting tall. Not enough friction!

(The muffin cups were a gift from [info]truepenny: this was their inaugural run. Thank you!!!)

Here are the socks and the blanket my mom knitted me, because I promised to brag about them.

20090406 006And here is my first ever hank of yarn, which I gave to my mother. It's "art yarn," which is to say it's not art yarn at all. It just sucks. But hey, it's mine and I made it.

We tried the prime rib recipe from Cook's Illustrated, and came to the conclusion that while it is good, our family recipe process is better. (We were all actually capable of stopping eating after one slice. Which never happens the way we usually do it.) However, their au jus recipe rocked, though next year we're leaving out the wine.

And Yorkshire puddings are a permanent addition. In two years, they'll be an ancient family tradition.

And then I beat the freezing rain home and let the dog out.

Now I'm going to make some tea and put on my wrist braces and go sit under my new blanket and work on The White City, because TBRE is out in the world tonight and I have the whole luxurious house to myself.

Oh, and gotta water the tree.

Merry Christmas guys!
Hope everyone is having the best holiday ever. We actually got a little snow this morning, woots! I have been up since 5am. (who can sleep on christmas eve anyway?)
Now every year we always exchange gifts with family on thanksgiving, with everyone scattered all over, it is the only time everyone is more or less in one place. So i figured that was going to be it. Oh we still had boxes under the tree here, but he has fooled me once before with that. So I figured they were just for looks and empty like last year. Well....I was half right. The boxes were empty, stuffed with tissue. except for one small box. Inside was a note, "go check the garage." hehe, all my gifts were in the trunk of the car! Uncle dave was in on the joke yet again. And Jenny kept me busy last night while dad got my new/used bike all set up. yeps i got a new bike! I out grew my other one. This one is white and silver and sooo pretty. We are going to give Ashley my old one. :)

And I got books. OH WOW did i get books! Grandpa got me all of the Alex Rider books, ALL of them! glee! I also got eight other books from Dad and Jenny, From Nina Kimberly to a book on the man who created Calvin and Hobbes. (can't wait to read that one.) I also got a pair of fuzzy killer bunny slippers from uncle dave. (Bunny from monty python, white with big point teeths!hehe.) Jenny got me some tommy girl and a huge warm white robe with big sleeves and a hood. (I look like a druid in it, hehe.)

And dad got me something I never expected. We are going to build me a desktop computer!! yeps, got the case, (pink) got the hard drive, mother board, video card, a cd play and a dvd player that plays blu ray disk!!! MEGA WOOTS!

Best christmas ever?? oh yea.

Ad all that to a cool origami kit i got from my farvorite aunt and uncle, and the pretty pink braclet I got from my other favorite aunt and uncle and I scored big time!

Hope you guys got all you wanted too. Funny thing is I never asked for anything this year...maybe I am on to something here. hmmmmm.
